Pentecostal and Charismatic forms of the Christianity are overwhelmingly the dominant forms of Christianity in Ghana. By Charismatic and Pentecostal I am referring to a type of theology which is part of a loose global movement and not necessarily churches or denominations that have those words in their names. Without understanding Pentecostalism you cannot understand Ghanaian Christianity. The question is how did we get here?
Dr. Jones Darkwa Amanor, a Ghanaian theologian, has written a paper I have found very helpful in outlining the history of the development of Pentecostalism in Ghana. It is titled Pentecostalism in Ghana: An African Reformation and it is written in a very accessible manner. You can click here to read the full paper or click here to download the PDF.
I only discovered this type of information when I decided to look for it. Most people are unaware of the somewhat surprising origins of Pentecostalism in Ghana. It has changed how I evaluate the contemporary state of Christianity in the country because it has helped me better grasp how we got to this moment. I hope you too will be better informed.
